Robert Sidney Stiff Sr.
(May 9, 1906 - January 26, 1993)
Robert Sidney Stiff was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on May 9, 1906.
He was the 5th son of John Edward Stiff and Ada Bell (Goff) Stiff
and the only one who survived childhood. His brothers
Virgil Lee, John Preston, Thomas Victor, and James Edward all died of Rhumatic Fever.
Robert married Florence on August 28, 1931 in Louisville.
Robert worked many jobs over his career.
He was a farmer and a custodian at St. Stephens Cathedral.
During WWII, both Robert and Florence worked at
Republic Aviation Corporation
in Evansville Indiana helping to build 6,242 P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes.
Robert was a security guard at Glenmore Distilleries for 30 years.
His second job during that time was as a wallpaper hanger.
He would hang paper on the walls and ceilings of the old houses in the Owensbboro area.
Many of those homes had ceilings that were as high as 15 feet.
Robert would stretch a walking board across from a ladder to a bannister to reach those 15 foot ceilings.
He would walk that board without fear and never fell.
Robert retired from Glenmore in 1976.
Robert is entombed in Mater Dolorosa Catholic Cemetery
